This news must be terrible for so many Thai business owners. There are not enough traditional Thai medical practitioners to be in every shop and training takes time. This is another decision where only the rich internationally owned businesses will be able to comply. Why do they seem so intent to make every regulation so cost and time sensitive that only the rich and connected will find it possible to comply? This isn’t even a case of hurting profits for normal Thai people, they’re trying to make it impossible to even comply with the regulation.
I feel terrible. This opportunity has allowed people so much economic mobility. People who had to be sex workers are business owners now. Hard working normal people were able to start making real money, and this was just the start. Thailand hasn’t even scratched the surface of the money its people were about to make. This industry doesn’t just sell cannabis it sells technology. Making bubblers and rosin and sifters and so on, they all use manufacturing equipment. Thailand was in the perfect place, in terms of both geography and legislation, to dominate the market for the product technology.
Do the Thai government think that the people they’re handing business to, the internationally connected western companies importing their products and technology into Thailand, want to invest in Thai technologies? No. They don’t. Let me settle that right now. They don’t want their manufacturing technologies or genetics etc. in the hands of ANYONE in Thailand. They want to make sure Thailand can NEVER compete. They want to make sure that Thailand’s cannabis industry involves making consistent orders of products that make more money than they do when sold in western domestic markets. And the Thai government is handing over the reigns.
If a US company produces in Thailand it sells at Thai prices. If it produces in the USA it sells at the US price PLUS extra. And then it takes all that money back to the USA never to be seen again by a Thai person.
Welshnan: There’s always 2 sides to a story. Sorry for your beating, but was the attack unprovoked? Was there cctv to prove what took place?
I don’t like to kick a man when he’s down but the BBC has reported his mother, Ms Shepherd is quoted as saying, “He’s still restrained to the bed by his feet and arms because he gets very frustrated.” Hmm, even when hospitalised and medical staff are trying to help him, his character traits come shining through. Could this have been a contributory factor in the attack, I wonder???
You can’t trust the Cambodian government, “The Scam Center Capitol of the World.” The PM should have known that when she talked on the phone.
Backpackers were the better tourists.
Mass tourism leads to collaps one day.
Was a mistake to chase the peaceful backpackers away.
