Ben Verlander discusses another eventful week in Major League Baseball. This week Ben discusses Shohei Ohtani’s pursuit of a 50 home run, 50 stolen base season. He also discusses what the Houston Astros’ will look to do with their playoff rotation and where Justin Verlander falls in their plans. He then talks about the magical season from Atlanta Braves’ Chris Sale and where not only the Braves’ would be without him, but where the Boston Red Sox would be if they had kept him. Sale is on track to win his
The question is should Ohtani pitch again if it means he cannot reach 50/50 or above?
Spot on accurate, Ben. Have to give Justin’s old team the Detroit Tigers some credit. They have really flown under the radar. Have surpassed my Rays and are now tied with the Red Sox and Mariners, only three games behind the Twins. And they have that weapon at the top of the rotation in Tarik Skubal, which makes them quite formidable.
I’m a born and raised houstonian. My great grandmother loved the Astros and so did my dad. They have both passed on now and that team is part of the fabric of who I am. That being said, seeing JV like this made me so sad. Not because we didn’t win those games but you can see he’s giving it everything he’s got and something is just off. He’s a leader and what my dad would call a molder of men. I think he still has what it takes and deserves to end his career on his terms. Not like this. He’s going to make some strong starts and that’s exactly what he deserves. JV forever.
I’m a bit anxious over the 50/50 thing, please get there quick Ohtani…
Dont worry the marlins will sweep by 30 runs
Great podcast. Keep up the good work, Ben…
Why does he start sounding like Jerry Seinfeld when talking about his brother?
The world is tuned into Ohtani’s march to 50 50. There many non sports news outlet such as CNN, Time, Forbes and many others who are reporting on this.
Justin Verlander needs to talk with Nolan Ryan and have him help and maybe Randy Johnson as well because I do believe not having a true Veteran pitcher in your rotation can hurt you I would put Verlander as a the 6th starter have maybe Yuis or Framber one of them will be 1 then 2 Hunter Brown 3 maybe Spencer Arrighetti 4 Ronel Blanco 5 either Hector Nreris or Kaleb Ort then Verlander would be the 6th
Shohei Ohtani will be the unanimously NL MVP, and its not even close. There is absolutely no case for Lindor to be MVP, its stupidity absurd. He’s batting at .269 and an OPS of 829, when was the last time someone win the mvp with an OPS that low? He is literally tailing The Chosen One in every offensive category, and its not even close.
DH can’t win MVP? and yet a bunch of pitchers has won MVP in the past, and none of these guys come close to Ohtani offensive prowess. If pitcher can win MVP so can a DH.
This is the media baiting and selling the news.
Update:
The last pitcher to win the NL MVP was Clayton Kershaw in 2014, and in the American League was Justin Verlander in 2011.
Kershaw was 21-3 with an ERA 1.77.
Verlander was 24-5 with an ERA 2.40.
I am willing to be bet Kershaw and J. Verlander never hit a home run or stolen a base in their MVP year. While pitchers are mainly a defensive position offensively they don’t do much.
