There are new marijuana laws in Thailand for 2024. So when you ask, is marijuana legal in Thailand, the answer is yes. For now. At present both medicinal and recreational use is permitted, just not allowed to be in public. The present 25,000 baht fine for public use is expected to jump to 60,000 baht soon, howeve, and technically the possibility of up to a one-year prison sentence. The Thailand National Assembly is presently debating the new cannabis laws and it is certain recreation use will end. Medically prescribed marijuana use will continue to be permitted.
Marijuana became legal in June, 2022. (Technically, it was decriminalized, being taken off the prohibited narcotics list.) It appears there will be no change to the legality of medical marijuana, and the many marijuana dispensaries, so popular in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya and elsewhere will continue to exist. But it is almost a certainty that a prescription will be required. So recreational marijuana is out and medical cannabis is in.
Thailand has no interest in being considered a drug destination, or in drug tourism. It is a conservative country that would rather foreigners visit for the friendly people, great food, beautiful beaches and temples, and amazing low prices.
That does not change the fact though, that Thailand weed is famous around the world for its characteristics and quality. Thailand marijuana laws will seek to balance medical benefits and the economic boon to the country, with its conservative citizens’ desires for less “in your face” existence of marijuana in Thailand presently.
It is anticipated that Thailand medical marijuana will not be too hard to obtain, as there are many “ailments” that can be claimed that cannabis is reputed to aid. This includes headaches, chronic pain, insomnia, anxiety and many specific serious medical conditions.
