Pritam Singh appeared on Keluar Sekejap, top Malaysian political podcast, and said he doesn’t want to be Prime Minister. We unpack what that means as well as other topics like whether WP’s risk-averse strategy is enough. Then we head to Thailand, where the government just announced a U-turn on weed, three years after legalising it. Is this proof that decriminalising drugs too fast can backfire?

Nothing new from mainstream media. PAP bootlick media
I weren’t invite Pritam if I were you guys since he would rather attend an overseas podcast than a local popular podcast! Looks like he is trying to show YLB is not worthy!
I had enough of politics. Never gonna vote again. It’s a waste of time. I’m not even asking for PAP to step down. Just a 59.9% score so that they can prioritise Locals more. But the stupid Singaporeans just gave their vote away for because they wanted a million dollar HDB.
The Malaysia podcast guys are definitely more eloquent than you 2 in yallah but
There’s so much to unpack here, but listening to Pritam in the podcast gives me the impression that he knows what he is doing and actually connects with the people on the ground. If you compare this with other opposition parties, he is actually doing the opposite of what they are doing, ie seeing themselves as the next PM.
As for Harish’s one shiok thing, there one really big glaring flaw and that is, he doesn’t know how an army works, and it’s all based on game theory. So it’s highly unlikely what he says might even happen.
even Lawrence wong never declared he wants to be a PM… in fact none of the PAP MP s never publicly declared they want to be one….
Every 5 years, in addition to adding about 110k new citizens , where their residential addresses are all known, just need 1 Boogeyman or fear factor like tariff or covid and voters won’t dare vote opposition to the extent that opposition vote share increase. Singaporeans are this cute one. SG politics was dead since LKY
There is a great future for opposition if you are not yet born today. I mean, pap is likely to have the iron tice bowl till at least SG100 and beyond. So, there is an inevitable chance of them losing one day but not in our life times. Not even in your children life times. Singaporeans are singaporeans. They gave away absolute super landslide majority without penalising any pap mp for any of the fiascos, failures and flaws in the past 5 years. They gave the vote even without complaining about COE and demand it be changed or replaced with ballot system like BTO that dont cost an arm and a leg. This means they dont see problem with COE. This is absolute high IQ
I feel that Harpreet was sacrificed. Pritam should have gone to Punggol and WP may have won. I think while PS worried he may not remain as LO going forward, he still very much wanted to remain LO and Aljunied is his safest place to contest in the GE. So Harpreet was sacrificed. Just my opinion. I can be totally wrong
The bigger question is, what is the point of having elections in Singapore and political contestation?
Since the PAP is so good, and only the PAP is capable of ruling, and the Singapore Electorate don’t care for a change of government. Why bother with elections or opposition politics?
Now, if the assumption is that the PAP could go rogue, and there is a need for an alternative government, then clearly, whichever party is going to run for election must be ready to step in as a government. There is no such thing as oh needing to have time to prepare. Look at the PAP, they were never in government before they won elections pre-independence. When they did, they had to learn on the job. When Singapore became independent, it brought about a different problem. And they have to learn on the job.
That’s why the point raised by the podcasters in KJ was clearly aimed at asking Pritam whether he thought about the second scenario if the PAP goes rogue. At this juncture, it may not seem like a plausible scenario, but if no thought is given to this scenario happening, then as the podcasters were trying to elude to, it is clearly why bother having election when there is no possibility of the PAP going rogue. Why not work from within the PAP to deal with tiny issues here and there?
Pritam could have given a diplomatic answer by saying if it came to the necessity to be the PM for the sake of the country. He would. Knowing full well, the chances of him becoming one anytime soon is unlikely. It also shows him to be a potential statesman not just the leader of a political party.
Now however unlikely the PAP ever goes rogue, there is also the issue of a freak election. After all, the PAP has mentioned that possibility. Now what happens if a freak election occurs and it went to the Worker’s Party under Pritam’s watch?
